Esquimalt Lagoon

Esquimalt Lagoon

The Esquimalt Lagoon was recognized as a Migratory Bird Sanctuary in 1931, and provides 134-hectares of pure bliss. If you aren’t a birdwatcher before your move to Seafield, you will soon be!

This tidal lagoon is separated from the Salish Sea (Straight of Juan de Fuca) by the 2.5 km Coberg Peninsula, and is an extraordinary place to explore, by foot or kayak.

Several small freshwater streams empty into the Lagoon, creating an ideal habitat for cutthroat trout, juvenile chinook and coho salmon, herring, pipefish and sticklebacks. Crabs, nudibranchs, shellfish, sand-dollars and anemones. It is a veritable smorgasbord for our feathered friends.

And speaking of our friendly neighborhood waterfowl…you will find a remarkable variety of bird-life at the Lagoon, feeding, resting, nesting, and impressing!

It won’t take you long to spot American coots, mallards, northern pintails, green-winged teals, American wigeons, hooded merganser, and oystercatchers. You will also find canvasbacks, buffleheads, cormorants, Canada geese, sandpipers and a variety of gulls. And to keep things exciting, Swans, Pacific Great Blue Herons, Osprey, and Bald Eagles are also a surprisingly common sight.
